To most of us that seems crazy. But, think about it. Most teams have a discount deal with their local tire distributor. Buying tires at the track isin't the cheapist way to go. 11 races, 4 new tires each night, 2 brands, at least 3 compounds, means a lot of choices. Tire choice can make or break you in a big race. Most teams carry around a lot of wheels also. Now think about how this helps low budget teams like me. For this season I bought, from a big time latemodel team, a pallet of 20 tires for $100.00, none used more than once, 5 never used. I also get good used N.B.L. and B.L. alum. wheels for $25.00 apiece. I also bought 4 new tires, discounted left overs from last season from a dealer in Iowa for $50 and $75 apiece. So I have 8 wheels and 24 tires for $525.00 Should last me at least 2 seasons. L.O.L. I can handle a $262.50 tire and wheel per season bill. Upside - should be able to buy real racing fuel this season. Downside - most of my used tires are Hoosiers and I'm a diehard American Racer guy. =#01H

If you look at that old photo of Charlie Swartz's trailer on this board you can see carrying a ton of tires around isn't new. back in those days not every track had a tire truck. Today the tire companies follow the traveling circuits.
Don't know about discounts that the teams have now. I used to sell new Hoosier and McCreary tires and Towel City and Marsh retreads back in the day. I never made enough $$$ on those darn things to offer a discount but things may have changed. Seems like a lot of tracks have gotten into the tire business at least at the paved tracks.
Maybe these well funded teams buy on consignment and only pay for what they use… don't know.
When my old bosses had an NDRA car in the 80's the trailer had an open two row tire rack… they carried spares with them but bought new tires at the track. With all the $$$ that's come into the sport in recent years I guess things have changed.
